Why Urology?

Patients, family members, and even other physicians sometimes ask why anyone would choose Urology as a specialty. It’s a relatively uncommon specialty that is often viewed as somewhat “unglamorous.”

I was first exposed to Urology as a third year medical student when I took it as an elective mostly because it was available and I had a hole to fill in my schedule. Even though my father was a physician (a radiologist), I had next to no knowledge of what a urologist was or what he did.

I was immediately impressed by the range of patients and conditions that were treated: Men and women of all ages. Benign conditions as well as cancers. Surgical patients and those who could be managed medically or with minimally invasive therapies. I was also impressed with the difference that a urologist could make in their patients’ lives. People with kidney stones, men who cannot urinate, or women who cannot control their urination are just a few examples of those who can be dramatically helped by a urologist.

Today, more than twenty-five years after I began my urologic training, I continue to get satisfaction every day from being able to help my patients live longer and more comfortable lives. And when all is said and done, who can as for more than that from a career?

Medical Interests

My practice includes all of General Urology, including the treatment of people of both sexes and all ages. I have an interest in the treatment of cancer and have done several hundred prostate cancer surgeries with the DaVinci robotic system over the last few years. I also find vasectomies and surgery for kidney stones to be particularly rewarding.
